When you travel often for work or for vacation, you probably know that sooner or later something will go wrong – a missed flight, lost luggage, language problems, and many more. Some trips go smoothly, others are full of surprises. But every problem has a solution. Sometimes you can prepare in advance, and other times it is important just to stay calm and react in the moment. And honestly, these are the moments that later become the best stories to share.
1. Before departure
Good preparation and planning of your trip are very important for your experience.
Do not forget to check the validity of your travel document (ID card or passport). Requirements can be different depending on the destination.
Check the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (“I am traveling to” section) for visa and border information: https://www.mfa.bg/bg/embassyinfo.
Make sure that the name on your plane ticket matches exactly the name in your document.
For short trips and flights with transfers, too much luggage can create inconvenience. Pack only the items you really need.
2. Missed flight
A delay of the first flight and a very short connection time often cause missing the next plane. It is recommended to have at least two hours between flights, especially at big airports. If you miss your flight, immediately ask for help from the airline desk or contact your travel agent.
3. Lost luggage
Lost luggage is one of the most common problems when flying. It is useful to have a small carry-on with essential items (toiletries, a spare set of clothes, medicines). If your luggage is missing, go to the “Lost & Found” desk right away and report it. You will receive a reference number to track your luggage.
4. Language barriers
Language difficulties can make orientation and communication harder. It helps to have the hotel name and address written in the local language, and to use offline translation apps.
5. Getting lost in a new city
Getting lost can lead to unexpected but sometimes wonderful places. To avoid stress, always keep the hotel address and contacts easily accessible on your phone.
6. Scams and pickpocketing
Tourist areas often attract pickpockets. Keep money and documents in different places, and leave valuable items in the hotel safe. If you lose your personal document, contact the Bulgarian embassy immediately.
7. Getting sick during the trip
Food poisoning or a cold are common and very unpleasant when traveling. It is good to carry basic medicines. Do not forget to make travel medical insurance – it will help if you need a doctor during your trip.
“Trip cancellation” insurance is useful if you or a family member gets sick right before the trip and you need to cancel. This insurance can help you recover part of your costs.
8. Bad weather
Weather conditions can change your plans. It is good to have a backup plan – indoor places, activities, museums. Unexpected situations often lead to new friendships and interesting experiences.
9. No internet or mobile signal
Lack of internet can make navigation or payments difficult. For far destinations, the best solution is to buy a local SIM card or use an international eSIM.
10. Loneliness and homesickness
During solo trips, it’s common to feel lonely. A good strategy is to join group tours, events, or cooking classes, which create opportunities to meet people and make new connections.
In the end, traveling is a mix of plans, emotions, and unexpected moments – and these moments make us more confident. Every problem has a solution, and every solution becomes a valuable experience and a story worth sharing.
